What is the best type of guest bed?

At Mattress Online, we have many types of guest beds to choose from. What’s best for you will depend on your own requirements, ranging from the space you have available to how often you welcome guests and how many usually visit.

Below we run through some of our most popular guest beds and the types of guests they’re most suitable for:

Sofa Beds

Sofa beds are a popular choice if you host guests infrequently or are short on space. The bed can be folded back into the sofa when not in use, maximising space when your guests aren’t there. This is especially useful if it’s located in the living room. Guest beds are also theperfect choice if you use your spare bedroom for something else, such as a home office or playroom.

Folding Beds

Folding guest beds are a great choice if you’re looking for a temporary bed for guests but don’t want to dig out an airbed from your camping equipment! These handy beds fold out and feature comfortable mattresses to help your visitors get a good night’s sleep. Once they leave, the bed can be folded back up and stored away until next time.

Bunk Beds

While you wouldn’t want to host two adults in bunk beds, they are the perfect choice if you regularly have grandchildren staying over. Usually with two sleeping spaces safely stacked on top of each other, they’re also a great space savere. And the little ones will love the excitement of sleeping in a bunk bed too!

What size guest bed is best for my room?

Before you choose your guest bed, you’ll need to weigh up:

• The number of guests you tend to host.
• The available space in your room.

Below we’ve recommended which size guest bed you should choose based on the number of guests you have:

Small single guest bed

If you’re tight on space, a small single bed could be a great choice. Measuring 2’6” x 6’3” (75cm x 190cm), this type of bed is best suited to children or petite guests, although an adult can sleep in it too, as it’s no shorter in length.

Single guest bed

Single beds are the most popular choice if your spare bedroom is also the box room. If you host guests that won’t be able to share a bed, you could always put two single beds in a larger room to maximise the number of guests you’re able to comfortably accommodate.

Double guest bed

One of the most popular choices for spare bedrooms, double beds are large enough for two adults to share. They’re affordable if you don’t want to spend a lot on your spare room and they won’t overwhelm the space (depending on the size of your room).

If you’re looking for a smaller bed that will still comfortably sleep two adults, check out a small double bed instead.

King size guest bed

King size beds aren’t the most popular choice for spare bedrooms but if you have the space, why not treat your guests to a large bed they can really stretch out in?

As with choosing any bed, we always recommend measuring the space you have available and comparing it to the dimensions of your chosen bed. We find this is easiest if you mask out the size of your chosen bed using masking tape on the floor, so you can see how much space you’d have once the bed is in place. Don’t forget to factor in space for door and drawer openings!

What is a trundle bed?

A trundle bed, also known as a pull-out bed, is a type of bed frame that has an additional bed underneath which you can pull out when you need to use it. Pull-out beds are space-saving and because they feature full-size mattresses, they’re super comfortable too.
