When you opt into our mattress recycling service, we’ll pick up your old mattress as we deliver your new one. All you need to do is leave your mattress near your front door - but not outside - so we can quickly and easily collect it. However, if you have chosen ‘Premium Delivery’, we will remove the mattress from any room of your choice as we deliver your new mattress to your specified room.

Our delivery teams will take all of the mattresses that are ready for recycling back to our local depots and transfer them to a dedicated mattress recycling facility.

These recycling centres separate the different components of your old mattress and organise the materials for the next step of their recycling journey. Staff will strip down the outer cover of your mattress and then remove any fillings, such as metal springs, wool, polyester and foam layers.

We partner with two mattress recycling facilities:

Bye Bye Beds recycles every component of the mattress and all fabrics to produce new mattresses.

SSSI Ltd recycles all metal components of your mattress. The fillings and fabric are transported to Taiwan and used to make dog and horse blankets.

Our mattress recycling service is non-profit for Mattress Online. The service costs £35 and this covers the complete recycling process, including:

  • Transport costs
  • Recycling facility fees
  • Processing costs

The importance of mattress recycling

The National Bed Federation Annual Recycling Reports estimate that only 14% of mattresses are recycled each year in the UK - that equates to 900,000  mattresses!

We’re proud to say that since the start of our recycling initiative, we've helped to save over 150,000 mattresses from landfill.

Mattresses that are sent to landfill have a serious impact on the planet. They can release toxic chemicals into the air, water and the ground. Landfill sites also destroy the natural habitat of wildlife, which can be devastating to local ecosystems.

How our mattress collection works

How much does mattress recycling cost?

Our recycling service costs £35, and is non-profit for Mattress Online.

All of the £35 goes towards the cost of:

  • Transport
  • Recycling facility fees
  • Processing

We do not profit from recycling your mattress.

How can I recycle my mattress with you?

All you need to do is:

  1. Order your new mattress
  2. Select your delivery day
  3. Select "Mattress recycling" in your basket

And then we'll simply take your old mattress away when we deliver your new one!

Do I have to buy a new mattress to qualify for recycling?

What size mattress can you recycle?

We will only recycle your old mattress if it is the same size or smaller than the one you have purchased from Mattress Online.

This is due to the space and weight we have allocated for your new mattress in our delivery vans.

What will you do with my old mattress when you pick it up?

Here’s the journey that your old mattress will complete once we have picked it up from your address:

  1. We will take your mattress back to our local depot
  2. It will then go to a dedicated mattress recycling facility - either Bye Bye Beds or SSSl Ltd
  3. At the recycling facility, your mattress will be stripped down to its core components
  4. These components will then be organised and recycled, ready to be made into either new mattresses or dog and horse blankets.

How to safely dispose of a mattress

How can I dispose of my mattress?

You can dispose of your mattress in a number of ways:

  1. Use our mattress recycling service
  2. Dispose of it through your local council
  3. Donate it to charity

Donating a mattress to charity

If your mattress is clean and in good condition, you can donate it to charity. Donating is a great way to give back to the community while also ensuring your unwanted mattress does not go to landfill.

Do charity shops take mattresses?

Many charity shops will accept mattress donations in their stores. However, given their size and how cumbersome mattresses are, getting them to the charity shop can be tricky and the charity shop may not have the space to store them.

If you are planning to donate a mattress, we recommend getting in touch with your chosen charity shop to make sure they can accept your mattress before you make the journey.

Can a charity collect my old mattress?

Yes, you can arrange for a charity to come and collect your old mattresses.

Here are some organisations that will collect your mattress:

You can find more information about arranging a mattress donation on each charity’s website.

Please note: Many charities will not accept your mattress without a valid Fire Safety Label.

Can I throw away my mattress?

Throwing away your mattress is extremely harmful to the environment and we do not recommend it.

By recycling your mattress, you can avoid landfill and help protect our environment now and in the future!

Can I take a mattress to the tip?

You can, but mattresses that are taken to the tip are not recycled. We suggest recycling your mattress at a designated facility to reduce the amount of waste in landfill.
