How to dispose of a mattress

How can I dispose of my mattress?

You can dispose of your mattress in a number of ways:

  1. Use our mattress recycling service
  2. Dispose of it through your local council
  3. Donate it to charity

However, many councils do charge a lot more than we do to collect your old mattress.

How much do councils charge for mattress disposal?

Some councils charge £30 or more to take away your mattress. With us, it only costs £28, which is less than lots of councils across the UK.

Donating a mattress to charity

If your mattress is clean and in good condition, you can donate it to charity. Here are some organisations which will collect your mattress. Choosing to donate a mattress is a great way of recycling your unwanted mattress and preventing it from going to landfill.

Do charity shops take mattresses?

Many charity shops will accept mattress donations in their stores. However, given the size and how cumbersome mattresses are, getting them to the charity shop can be tricky and the charity shop may not have space to store your item.

If you are planning to donate a mattress, we recommend giving your chosen charity shop a call to make sure they can accept your item before you make the journey.

Charities that collect mattresses

You can arrange for a charity to come and collect your old mattresses. Here are some organisations which will collect your mattress:

  • British Heart Foundation
  • British Red Cross
  • Emmaus
  • Sue Ryder
  • Furniture Donation Network

You can find more information about arranging a mattress donation on each charity’s website.

Can I throw away my mattress?

The National Bed Federation estimates that only 19% of mattresses are recycled each year in the UK. That equates to seven million mattresses being disposed of, which weighs the same as 6,000 humpback whales!

But mattresses which are sent to landfill have a serious impact on the planet. They can release toxic chemicals into the air, water and the ground. Landfill sites also affect animals by destroying their natural habitat, plus they look and smell awful.

By recycling your mattress, you can avoid landfill and help protect our precious environment now - and in the future!

Can I take a mattress to the tip?

Mattresses that are taken to the tip are not recycled. We suggest recycling your mattress to reduce the amount of waste in landfill rather than taking it to the tip.

How mattress collection works

How much does mattress recycling cost?

It's just £28! We think this is very competitive, especially given that most councils charge a lot more.

How can I recycle my mattress?

It's easy to dispose of your mattress with our collection and recycling service.

All you need to do is:

  1. Order your new mattress
  2. Decide on your delivery day
  3. Select "recycle my old mattress" at checkout

We'll take your old mattress away when we deliver your new one!

Do I have to buy a new mattress?

Yes, we can only collect your old mattress when we deliver your new one. Take a look at our great range of mattresses!

You can buy mattresses that use recycled materials, too:

  • Our Silentnight Eco Comfort range contains Eco Comfort Fibres, a cooling, breathable comfort layer made from repurposed plastic bottles! It's fully recyclable and sustainable, too
  • Many of our Sleepeezee mattresses include 30% recycled steel within the mattress springs

What will you do with my old mattress?

We'll recycle it! We work in partnership with carefully selected mattress recycling organisations, who process each mattress at a dedicated recycling plant.

Firstly, they separate out each mattress component - such as the steel from the mattress springs, or the comfort fillings such as wool and cotton. They then re-distribute them across many different industries. The mattress components can be made into insulation for homes, materials used in cars, and so much more!

The great news is that when you choose to recycle, 100% of your old mattress can avoid landfill.

On your collection day

What time will you arrive?

We deliver and collect between 7am - 8pm, Monday to Saturday, and most Bank Holidays.

You won't have to wait in all day though. You'll get a two-hour time slot the evening before, and we'll call you on the day to let you know when we'll arrive.

How should I prepare my mattress for collection?

On your delivery day, all you need to do is:

  1. Remove all bedding from your mattress (we can't take that away)
  2. Leave it near to your front door (but not outside), ready for us to collect

If you've chosen two-man delivery, you can leave your old mattress on your bed (without bedding). We'll take it away from your room.

Can you take away more than one mattress?

However, if you purchase more than one mattress, we can collect any mattress - up to the amount you've bought.

We won't ask you to pay more than once, though.

Can you take away my old bed too?

Sorry, we can only collect your old mattress at the moment. We can't take away your bed or your bedding - yet!
