We want you to be confident in knowing which double mattress will suit your needs. This guide will help you make the perfect choice.

Is a double mattress right for me?

First, let's make sure this size of mattress is right for you. A double mattress gives a sleeping space of 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in / 135cm x 190cm and is ideal if you want to snuggle up with your partner, or if you’re upgrading from a single or small double bed to have the extra space to stretch out.

If you sleep with a partner, you’ll want to consider the temperature regulation properties to sleep cool, the motion transfer properties to not disturb your partner and the general comfort materials to suit your needs.

If you have the space in your bedroom, we do recommend considering a king size mattress as this can give you an extra 15cm (6in) of sleeping space, along with an extra 10cm (3in) in length if you're particularly tall. Over a third of our customers choose a king size or larger mattress^[2].

What size is a UK double mattress?

A double mattress is 135cm (4ft 6in) wide x 190 cm (6ft 3in) long and offers a great sleeping space for couples and individuals who like to stretch out. The size is standard across all beds and mattresses made in the UK. So if you have a double bed, a double mattress will fit.

We also offer two slightly different size variations of a UK standard double mattress:

• Small double mattresses which are 15cm (3in) smaller in width than a double mattress.
• European double mattresses are a little bit wider and longer than UK double mattresses.

Will a double mattress fit my bed?

Sometimes you might be unsure what size bed you have. Using a tape measure you can see if it is 135cm wide and 190cm long. If you're measuring your existing mattress, this can vary by around 2cm which is fine.

If you can't find the size of your bed in our listing, then it might be a European sized bed. We do sell European double mattresses as well as other European sizes.

What base do I need for a double mattress?

Most beds either come with wooden bed slats or a solid base. Any double mattress from Mattress Online will work perfectly with either type of bed base.

If you do have wooden slats, most manufacturers recommend that the space between the slats should be less than 7.5cm to avoid any sagging through the gaps.

How deep should my double mattress be?

Generally speaking, the deeper the double mattress, the more luxurious it will be. A popular mattress depth is around 24cm (9.4in) which will give you great support and comfort, going up to as high as 31cm (12.2in) for extra durability and comfort.

Just remember, if you're going for a deeper double mattress, you might want to pair it with an extra deep mattress protector.

What type of double mattress do I need?

There are quite a few features to consider when choosing a double mattress. We can simplify this into the support system, comfort layer and additional benefits.

Support system

• Pocket sprung double mattresses are our customers’ most popular choice. Your weight is spread across individually cased springs to give you support exactly where you need it most. A larger spring count can provide more refined and durable support and some mattresses may use multiple layers of springs to provide both support and comfort.
• Standard sprung double mattresses have springs that are interconnected and topped with a variety of comfort layers. This is often referred to as an ‘open coil spring system’ as the springs aren't nested in their own cloth pockets, like in pocket sprung mattresses. The advantage of a standard sprung mattress is that they provide an even level of firmness across the whole mattress and are usually more budget friendly than pocket sprung options.
• Reflex foam double mattresses have become increasingly popular as they have a highly resilient and supportive mattress core. The support layer in these mattresses is often made of high density polyurethane foam. This offers a wide range of benefits, including increased mattress stability, reduced motion transfer and improved pressure relief for your joints.

Comfort layer

• Memory foam double mattresses are a popular comfort layer choice.

Full memory foam mattresses do not include a spring unit, and memory foam is used for both the support and comfort layers.

The foam uses your natural body heat to mould to your unique body shape while you sleep. This gives you tailored support for your sleeping position, even if you toss and turn in the night.

• Latex double mattresses are a natural alternative to memory foam with the benefit of responding to your body shape faster. Latex mattresses are usually more expensive than memory foam as they use premium, eco-friendly materials, offer superior durability^[5], and deliver exceptional comfort.
• Hybrid double mattresses generally use a memory or gel foam comfort layer in conjunction with a pocket sprung support system. • Fibres, such as Silentnight's Eco Comfort Fibre, as well as foam, are a great way of providing comfort and are very cost effective. They are often paired with a spring support system.
• Natural filling double mattresses are a great choice as they are blissfully comfortable, use sustainable materials and are naturally hypoallergenic. These fillings usually include a combination of the following natural materials: wool, cotton, cashmere and silk. This helps to create a luxuriously comfortable mattress.
• Pillow top double mattresses feature an extra layer of comfort to give your mattress a nice plush feeling, without compromising the support system. So, if you want a firm mattress to support your spinal alignment, but like the feeling of sinking into bed after a long day, then consider upgrading to a pillow top mattress.
• Gel foam is a type of advanced memory foam that regains its original shape faster than traditional memory foam. This helps to improve your sleep because it can respond to your movements faster if you tend to move a lot in your sleep to ensure you stay fully supported.

Gel beads contour to your body shape as you sleep, rather than relying on your body heat like memory foam mattresses.

Gel mattresses also have inherent cooling abilities that draw heat away from your body, helping to keep you at the perfect temperature during the night.

Additional benefits

• Orthopaedic double mattresses (or ortho mattresses) are generally firmer than most mattresses and are designed to promote a healthier spinal alignment while you sleep and provide targeted joint support. Our orthopaedic mattresses are ideal if you suffer from a bad back.
• All mattresses are either single-sided or double-sided. We recommend that you rotate your mattress every couple of months to increase the lifespan of your mattress by alternating the places that will get the most use.

Single-sided mattresses should be rotated once every month and double-sided mattresses should be flipped and rotated every month. This helps to preserve the performance of your mattress for years to come.

How firm should my double mattress be?

When you try a mattress in a store, you are often testing out the firmness of the mattress. However, the feel of the mattress may not mean that you will automatically have a restful and healthy sleep.

Here’s a quick guide to help you make a decision:

• Soft-to-medium firm double mattresses. These mattresses are great if you love that sinking feeling when you lay on your mattress. If you're light (around 60 kg and under) then a softer mattress will help ensure that you're getting the right support across your body. A softer mattress can also relieve pressure on your body which may improve your circulation. If you have wide shoulders or hips and like to sleep on your side, a soft mattress can help you keep your spine aligned.
• Firm and extra firm double mattresses. These are great if you're a front sleeper as they will help maintain your body position more naturally. If you suffer from back problems then a firmer mattress is usually recommended. This is why our orthopaedic mattresses are often on the firmer side. If you're heavier or concentrate your weight in a specific area, then a firmer mattress will be ideal to prevent you from sinking into the mattress and misaligning your posture.
• Medium firmness double mattresses. This is the most popular firmness choice as these mattresses are neither too soft nor too firm. They're great for back and side sleepers and if your partner has a different body weight than you. What if I choose the wrong firmness?

We understand that it can be difficult to find the perfect double mattress firmness for you. This is why we offer a free comfort trial on all of our mattresses.

It may take a few weeks to fully feel comfortable on a new mattress, but if after 30 nights it still just doesn’t feel right, let us know and we'll swap it for another mattress free of charge - you just pay the difference if you upgrade to a more expensive mattress. Just remember to use a mattress protector to protect the double mattress during your trial period.

Care tips

When should I replace my double mattress?

Generally speaking, a healthy life span of a double mattress is between 6 and 8 years, but some people choose to replace them earlier. This could be because they start to notice how stiff or achy they feel when they wake up in the morning, or they struggle to stay asleep due to the feel of their mattress.

Mattresses do degrade in performance over time, especially if they haven't been rotated every couple of months to even out the wear and tear on the mattress. In addition, mattresses accumulate debris from our sweat and skin cells, which means the environment we sleep in isn't as fresh and healthy as it could be.

How long should a double mattress last?

A double mattress is designed to last for many years, but we recommend replacing it every 7 years to ensure a healthy and optimal sleeping environment.

At Mattress Online, you'll find our mattresses have a manufacturer supported warranty or guarantee ranging between 5 years to 15 years.

As with all products, following the care recommendations will improve the longevity of your new double mattress.

Can you take away my old double mattress?

If you decide to buy a new double mattress with us here at Mattress Online, you can opt into our mattress recycling service for £35. This fee is non-profit and covers the costs of transporting your mattress and the recycling facility charges.

This prevents your old mattress from going to landfill and ensures that your mattress components are reused responsibly and sustainably.
