Standard bunk beds are typically two single beds, stacked on top of each other. However, you can also get three-sleepers, which include a double bed underneath and a single bed on top.
When you buy online, you should always find the size dimensions clearly displayed. This is important to check since the individual dimensions of each bunk bed can vary in length, width and height.
Are bunk beds safe?
Yes, they're safe if they are built carefully according to the manufacturer's instructions. When building your bunk bed, test it yourself to ensure it's stable and sturdy. Check it regularly to make sure all parts are securely fastened and remain in good working order.
All bunk beds in the UK must adhere to British Safety Standard BS EN 747-1:2012+A1:2015 and must include safety barriers around the top bed. Read more.
What age can a child go in a bunk bed?
Only children 6 years or older should use the top bunk. Whilst there is no specific minimum age for the lower bed, babies, toddlers and younger children should sleep in their own bed until they're old enough.
What mattress do I need for a bunk bed?
Whilst you can choose any mattress, we recommend a bunk mattress, which is specifically designed for bunk beds.
It's important that the top of the bunk mattress sits 16cm below the top of the safety barrier, as advised by BS EN 747-1:2012+A1:2015. This helps the safety barriers to work effectively. Your bunk bed will include a permanent mark or sticker, to indicate the maximum mattress thickness.
