Keeping your baby’s mattress clean is essential for creating a healthy, safe sleep environment. To help you out, Hannah Shore, our Head of Sleep Science, has put together this expert guide on how to clean a cot bed mattress the right way.
Accidents are all part of parenthood, but with the right know-how, you can keep your baby’s mattress fresh, hygienic, and supportive for restful sleep.
The best cleaning method will depend on the materials your mattress is made from, but here are some general steps I recommend.
Before you do anything, take a look at the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions - this will either be explained on a label or in a small booklet that arrived with your mattress.
It will contain specific instructions that are tailored to the materials and construction of the mattress. Following these guidelines helps you avoid damage and ensures you're cleaning it in the safest and most effective way possible.
Many cot bed mattresses come with a removable, machine-washable cover - a real lifesaver for dealing with daily accidents. If your mattress has one, unzip it and pop it in the washing machine, following the care label instructions carefully (especially the temperature setting and drying method).
A clean cot mattress cover not only looks fresher but also helps maintain a hygienic sleep space for your baby.
For accidents or unexpected spills, quick action makes all the difference:
Hannah has a brilliant tip:
Use as little water as possible! Cot bed mattresses are often made with absorbent materials like foam or springs that don’t dry easily. Excess water can seep into the core of the mattress and cause issues like mould, mildew, or unpleasant odours over time — all of which can affect your baby’s health and the mattress's lifespan.
Make sure the cot mattress is completely dry before using it again. A damp mattress can create an unhealthy sleeping environment, encouraging mould or bacterial growth.
After spot-cleaning, give the mattress plenty of time to dry out completely before putting it back into the cot. Never cover or use a mattress that’s even slightly damp - moisture can create the perfect environment for bacteria and mould to grow, which isn’t healthy for your baby.
Start by vacuuming the entire cot bed mattress - top, sides, and underside - using an upholstery attachment if available. This helps remove dust, hair, and allergens that can accumulate over time.
Don’t forget to vacuum the cot frame as well, especially in corners and crevices where debris often collects. Regular vacuuming keeps the sleeping environment fresh and hygienic for your little one.
